St. Martin School Cologne Funds Well Project in Nigeria

St. Martin School Cologne Funds Well Project in Nigeria

Clean drinking water is still a luxury for many people around the world. That’s why projects that provide sustainable support and improve living conditions over the long term are so vital. Thanks to the remarkable dedication of St. Martin School in Cologne, one such project was successfully completed: the construction of a drinking water well at a school in Nigeria.

Great Commitment from a Strong School Community

Students, parents, and teachers at St. Martin School came together to show what solidarity can achieve. As part of a creative school project, the school community managed to raise over €4.100 for the construction of a well. The funds were generated through a project week featuring circus performances, as well as additional activities such as the sale of cakes and homemade drinks.

This commitment made it possible to cover the full cost of the well and fund the project independently.

Clean Water for a School near Abuja

The well was constructed on the grounds of the Madonna International School in Gwagwalada, near Nigeria’s capital, Abuja. Today, around 800 students benefit daily from clean drinking water—for drinking, washing, and maintaining better hygiene throughout the school day.

The official inauguration of the well was a truly special moment for everyone involved. A distinguished church guest attended the ceremony to formally hand over the new water supply. The well is permanently marked, serving as a lasting symbol of the support from Cologne.

A Special Guest at the Inauguration

A highlight of the project was the formal opening of the well. Cardinal John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan, former Archbishop of Abuja and one of Nigeria’s most respected church leaders, personally visited the school for the occasion.

In his speech, Cardinal Onaiyekan stressed the vital importance of clean water for education, health, and human dignity. He commended the remarkable commitment of the students from Cologne and underscored how essential international solidarity and hands-on local support are. His presence added a particularly solemn and meaningful recognition to the project.

From Idea to Implementation – Everything from a Single Source

As a humanitarian organization, we managed the entire project: from selecting a suitable location, coordinating activities on site, to the professional execution of the well construction. Close collaboration with local partners ensured that the well was built sustainably and remains fully functional for the long term.

This structured approach allowed the project to be implemented transparently, efficiently and successfully.

Sustainable Aid That Reaches Those in Need

For St. Martin School, this well project was truly special. While the school regularly engages in social initiatives, these are usually focused on the local community. This international aid project gave the students a new perspective on global responsibility and solidarity.

The completed well now stands as a visible symbol of what collective action can achieve—and how education, commitment, and aid can connect people across borders. A commemorative plaque at the well serves as a lasting reminder of St. Martin School Cologne’s support and the shared dedication that spans continents.

Thank You for This Powerful Act of Humanity

We sincerely thank the entire St. Martin School community in Cologne for their trust, dedication, and support. This project is a powerful reminder that even young people can achieve remarkable things when they work together.
